Girl Scouts Adventure Weekend

Over the President's Day holiday weekend, the FSDB Girl Scouts Troop organized a trip to Camp Chowenwaw, a park in Green Cove Springs (Clay County) that was a Girl Scout camp built in 1933. It has been preserved in its original natural state and provided a beautiful camping environment.

On Friday night, girls attended a performance of Stomp at the Times Union Performing Arts Center in Jacksonville. It was a fantastic show with no dialog, featuring performers playing improvised percussion instruments: push brooms, grocery carts, Zippo lighters, and plastic milk jugs. After the performance, troop members were able to chat with the performers, a rare treat.

On Saturday afternoon, the troop went roller skating in Orange Park. That evening they made pudgy pies by the campfire and held crafting activities, a favorite Girl Scout pastime. The next day, they went ice skating in Jacksonville, complete with polar bears and holiday trees. The troop wrapped up the weekend visiting two public parks along the St. Johns River, hiking and picnicking.

The girls planned and prepared their meals, set up and cleaned up after themselves, provided public service at Camp Chowenwaw (a Girl Scout tradition), and learned how to plan for a weekend of adventuring and outdoors activities. They learned and practiced skills that will help them grow into young women with courage, confidence, and character who are committed to making the world a better place.
