“Believe in yourself, you can do anything!”
These are the inspiring words of Gabby, a remarkable student at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind (FSDB). Gabby, who has optic nerve hypoplasia, faces challenges with her vision and hearing, but at FSDB, she has found a place to thrive and shine.
Gabby’s journey at FSDB began when she was just six years old and starting second grade. Her father discovered FSDB through a YouTube video, a life-changing moment that set Gabby on a path to success.
With a bright smile, Gabby says her favorite subject is Algebra, which she enjoys thanks to the engaging teaching style of Mrs. Jenson, who “makes math fun”, and Mrs. Wohl, who brings a relaxed, supportive approach to the classroom. Gabby dreams of becoming a second-grade teacher, eager to inspire and support students just as she was helped. She describes FSDB as “a place where everyone can be equal, no matter their disability,” a sentiment that beautifully reflects the school’s mission.
Gabby’s love for FSDB extends beyond academics. A few months after enrolling, a teacher recognized her musical talent and encouraged her to join the choir and dance. Though initially nervous, Gabby soon overcame her fears and found a passion for performing. “I loved it!” she recalls, her face lighting up with pride and joy. Today, she thrives in dance, colorguard, and the Blinding Lights Show Choir, expressing herself in ways she once only dreamed of.
Your generous support has been important in Gabby’s journey, nurturing her talents and building her confidence. As Gabby says, your donations are “giving the gift of music to others!”
