Interpreter Services
The Interpreter Services department at FSDB supports the needs of students, parents, staff members, and other individuals who are associated with FSDB.
FSDB staff and contractual interpreters adhere to the RID Code of Professional Conduct. Most interpreters employed by FSDB hold National Interpreter Certification (NIC).
FSDB interpreters provide services to students and school personnel in various settings: classrooms, school events and meetings, health care and related service appointments, extracurricular activities, internships and interviews, and other activities as requested. Interpreting methods and approaches include interpreting from ASL to spoken English, spoken English to ASL, close vision, tactile, and oral interpreting, based on the needs and preferences of the people involved.
An ASL instructor within the Interpreter Services department provides one-on-one ASL skills development for individual students and ASL classes for staff members. The department also administers the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) for school personnel, as required.
Interpreter services are also provided to FSDB students enrolled in off-campus programs, e.g., First Coast Technical College, St. Augustine High School and St. Johns River State College.
